Brown cloud over Essar Steel Algoma result of a ‘power bump’

Cause unknown, Ministry of Environment notified

A SooToday reader submitted this photo which shows a large brown cloud emanating from Essar Steel Algoma earlier Thursday.

“I can confirm at 10:17 a.m. today we experienced a power bump which caused some automation systems to reset, leading to the temporary suspension of some operations across the steelworks,” wrote Brenda Stenta, Algoma communications and branding manager, in an email response to SooToday.

“This necessitated the beaching of in-process iron and the flaring of by-product gas normally consumed by the operation,” Stenta wrote.

“Normal power supply resumed immediately and a controlled resumption of impacted operating areas is underway. The cause of the power bump is currently under investigation. The Ministry of Environment has been notified,” Stenta wrote.

Readers informed us earlier Thursday of the cloud and an accompanying foul odour.
