The following statement regarding the on-line post investigation was provided by Joe Maurice, Superintendent – Well-Being & Indigenous Education Algoma District School Board.

"The investigation focused on a very concerning social media post that arose following a basketball game almost two weeks ago.

The original games were postponed to allow time for the completion of the investigation which could have involved players and/or spectators, thus we did not want to potentially create an unsafe environment by holding more games.

The investigation was conducted in collaboration with our coterminous school board and the Sault Ste. Marie Police Department, and is now completed.

The Algoma District School Board does not tolerate racism or any racially motivated acts, thus, while appropriate consequences have been implemented, we will continue to message to our student athletes and families the need for sportsmanship and respectful behaviour both on and off the court, and to publicly share our commitment to anti-racism.

It is imperative that our schools remain respectful, welcoming and safe environments and that the dignity of every person is protected, which includes those involved (whether participating, supervising or spectating) in any sporting events and school-sponsored activities."

The boy's high school basketball championship games have been rescheduled for April 11 at St. Mary's.

The games were postponed due to an online post that was racist in nature.

“We are investigating a matter involving a social media post," Lucia Reece, Algoma District School Board director of education said at the time.

Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board director of education Danny Viotto added that the postponement is to provide additional time to fully investigate the issue.

"There is an investigation taking place related to an online post. Since more time is required to fully investigate this matter the games have been postponed," Viotto said at the time in an email.

The games will see White Pines take on St. Mary's in the junior game at 5:30 p.m. and St. Mary's face Korah in the senior final at 7:30 p.m.
