Former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet died today, one week after he suffered a heart attack, a military hospital in Santiago announced.

General Pinochet, accused of kidnapping, torturing and murdering his political opponents, died on International Human Rights Day.

He was 91.

General Pinochet took power in 1973 after democratically elected President Salvador Allende was deposed in a military coup.

Pinochet's economic reforms, heavily influenced by the ideas of Nobel Prize-winning U.S. economist Milton Friedman, are widely credited with ushering in a long period of economic growth in Chile.

He spent his final years fighting accusations of human rights abuses and of transferring $27 million to offshore bank accounts.

Despite the human rights accusations against him, Pinochet was admired and loved by many in his homeland.
