ALGOMA DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD

**************************** Proposed new Hornepayne JK-12 school design shared at ADSB committee of the whole board meeting in Hornepayne

HORNEPAYNE - The Algoma District School Board (ADSB) held their Committee of the Whole meeting in Hornepayne on February 23, 2010.

The public meeting began with special presentations by students and staff from the Hornepayne Elementary and Secondary Schools.

Students who competed last Friday at a piano recital in Hearst, performed some of their award-winning numbers for the assembled Board members and guests.

Several orals were presented by students who recently competed in the public speaking competitions at their school.

Members of the senior boys volleyball team were on hand to show off the division banner they won earlier this year.

The divisional win was a first for the school.

Director of Education Mario Turco and Superintendent Asima Vezina provided an update to the board and to the community members at the meeting on the proposed new Hornepayne JK-12 school design.

Conceptual drawings from davidELLIS Architect and Teeple Architects were reviewed.

Designed to replace the current Hornepayne Public School as well as the two campuses of Hornepayne High School (main building in the mall and the annex), the new building will feature all the program areas necessary for students to learn and thrive.

The new school will have many of the features found in schools across the province: classrooms, specialty spaces (science lab, music room, and art room) and new, exciting features that will form the backbone of the new building.

These features will include a double-sized gymnasium with a dividing curtain which allows it to be a multi-use room, a library, a servery for small meals and an open-concept forum which will allow groups of students to meet in a relaxed, naturally lit room.

The forum will provide a space for small to medium sized gatherings, drama presentations, speeches and a host of other activities.

Directly between the gymnasium and the forum is a stage that can be viewed and accessed from either side.

The new Tech wing will feature a multi-use technology classroom, with sections for traditional woodworking and construction, as well as a fabrication area for welding.

A tech classroom, that features windows that look out into both areas, will allow for easy access to a classroom environment for drafting, planning and other classroom activities.

Designed as a two-story building, the majority of secondary services are located on the top floor including several classrooms, the science lab, guidance office and art room.

The main floor features the library, gym, music room, the forum and gymnasium as well as all elementary classrooms and administration/reception.

The servery, which opens into the forum will allow for the preparation of small meals, such as those prepared during fundraising ventures, as well as a convenient place to operate the school’s snack program from.
