A local woman will be sentenced on June 5 for burglaries that took place at the Batchewana bingo hall and another Batchewana First Nation building in the fall of 2022.

Reba Stevens, 37, pleaded guilty to six offences, including two counts of break and enter to commit an indictable offence, two counts of theft and single charges of mischief and masking her face to commit the indictable offence of theft.

Ontario Court Justice Romuald Kwolek heard some details of the crimes last Thursday.

On Sept. 3, 2022 Stevens was at Batchewana Bingo Hall and Gaming where she hid in the washroom until it closed.

She grabbed two pink laptops, and triggered the alarms as she left the building, prosecutor Heidi Mitchell said.

Her actions were captured on surveillance cameras.

The video showed she was dressed in black, with something covering her face in an attempt to hide her identity, in the early morning hours of Sept. 4, Mitchell told the court.

On Sept. 7-8, Stevens broke into another building, where she stole several Chromebooks, laptops and electronic devices.

The items, valued at $6,000 to $8,000, were the property of the North Shore Tribal Council.

She was caught on video at the building between 12:15 and 3:40 a.m.

Stevens was seen jimmying a lock at the main door, then gathering items and placing them in boxes.

The cameras showed her leaving the building, pulling a trolley loaded with the boxes and two large duffle bags shortly after 3:30 a.m.

The video also showed her making a mess in the office with a bag of feces.

At the request of defence lawyer Eric McCooeye, sentencing was put over to the June date so that a pre-sentence report can be prepared.
