Morning news:

Dangers of Playing on Snow Banks

With the amount of snow we have received this year, the snow banks certainly are appealing to young children. However, children are often focused on the fun and not the dangers.

Officers from the Community Relations and Crime Prevention Section of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service attend at the elementary schools and speak to children about the dangers of sliding into traffic.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service has received several complaints of young children sliding down snow banks onto the roads.  The complaints have been while the children are waiting for school buses and have occurred in several locations in the City.

The mild weather also provides the perfect opportunity to make snow forts.  Often children will create forts into snow banks and dig tunnels. This can be dangerous if the tunnel were to collapse.

Additionally crews from the City’s Public Works & Transportation have been busy cutting down snow banks.  While clearing roads the drivers may not see a child hiding or playing around the banks.

As a parent or caregiver, please take a few minutes to reinforce the dangers of playing on snow banks and the risk of digging tunnels.

Drivers should be alert and need to be aware of children playing around high banks, especially in the hours to and from school.

We want every child in our community to have a safe and enjoyable winter.
