Fraudulent Fundraising Alert:

City police received information this morning from the Kidney Foundation that two members of the public contacted them yesterday advising that two suspicious male youths attended at their residences late yesterday afternoon in the Morin and Nelson Street areas advising they were with the Kidney Foundation and were attempting to solicit donations. The males were described as late teens – early 20’s one wearing a dark coat, the other a white one. They did not produce any identification or documentation.

The Kidney Foundation advised that they are not door to door fundraising at this time. Police want the public to know if they are approached by anyone claiming to be raising funds for the Kidney Foundation, they should not give them money, but should instead report the solicitors to the police.

Police would like to remind the public that if persons canvassing at their door, fundraising or attempting to sell them something and they are not producing identification or documentation for the Agency they advised they are representing, they should be cautious.

Two Males Arrested on Outstanding Warrants:

1) 27 year-old James Wilson of 70 Wellington Street East (Main Floor) was arrested on the 24th of November at 11:20 am on Poplar Avenue on outstanding warrants and charged with one count of breach of probation, one count of breach of a release order and one count of fail to appear in court. He is to appear in bail court this morning.

2) 36 year-old James Syrette of 44 Nebenaigoching Street in the Rankin Reserve was arrested on the 24th of November at 3:15 pm at the Court House on an outstanding warrant and charged with one count of fail to appear court from the 14th of July. He is to appear in court on the 5th of January, 2009.

Male Youth Shoplifter Arrested:

A 17 year-old male youth was arrested on the 24th of November at 8:45 pm at the Station Mall and charged with one count of theft under $5,000.00, one count of possession of a controlled drug or substance and one count of breach of a release order. It is alleged that on the 24th of November just after 8 pm the accused
Attended at the West 49 Store in the Station Mall and stole a wallet. He was apprehended by a store employee and mall security and held for police. When arrested, the accused was found in possession of a small amount of marihuana. The accused was also breaching his curfew hours as a condition of a recognizance release order by not being in his residence from 6 pm to 6 am. He is to appear in court on the 13th of January, 2009.

Male Youth Arrested for Escaping from Youth Detention Staff Member:

A 13 year-old male was arrested on the 24th of November at 11:55 am on Queen Street East and charged with one count of escape lawful custody. It is alleged that around 11:15 am the accused was in custody of a local Youth Detention Centre staff member at the court house for a scheduled court appearance when he escaped by running out the west entrance and down Queen Street East. The staff member took chase and apprehended the accused a short distance away behind a downtown business. City police were called for assistance and the youth was arrested. He is to appear in court on the 7th of January, 2009.

Theft Reports:


• A purse was stolen from the Steelton City bus yesterday afternoon just after 4 pm. The purse was left on the bus a short time when the owner got off.
• An extension ladder was reported stolen sometime overnight from the property of a residence on Adelaide Street.

Mischief Reports:

• The glass panel on the bus shelter at Great Northern Road near Old Garden River Road was smashed.
• A school bus sign was knocked down and damaged in the Isabel Fletcher School grounds sometime over the past weekend.
