Male arrested on Outstanding Warrants

28 year-old James Purcell of #15-306 Korah Road was arrested on the 16th of June at approximately 3:42 pm at a downtown bar on outstanding warrants for mischief, assault, and assault with a weapon from incidents in March and April of this year. When officers were taking the accused into custody, he was found in possession of a knife with a blade that opened with centrifugal force, a prohibited weapon. He was further charged with one count of unauthorized possession of a prohibited weapon. He is to appear in bail court this morning.

Male Youth Charged with Assault

A 15 year-old male youth was arrested on the 16th of June at approximately 3:47 pm at his residence and charged with one count of assault. It is alleged that on the 14th of June at approximately 11 pm the accused assaulted a male known to him at in the park area of a local school. The victim received non-life threatening injuries that did not require medical attention. He is to appear in court on the 27th of July.

Female Arrested on Outstanding Warrant

40 year-old Janet Nichols was arrested on the 16th of June at 10:15 am at the Court House on an outstanding warrant for failing to appear for prints from the 6th of June. She is to appear in court on the 21st of July.

Male Arrested For Obstructing Police

56 year-old John Erickson of #1-125 Gore Street was arrested on the 16th of June at approximately 10:10 am and charged with one count of obstruct police and one count of being intoxicated in a public place under the Liquor Licence Act. It is alleged that when city police were dealing with the incident involving the armed male in the Gore Street area yesterday morning, the accused entered an area that police had cordoned off and were denying public access to. The accused came out of his residence on three occasions after being instructed by police to go back inside for his own safety. On the fourth occasion, the accused was arrested. At the time of his arrest, it is further alleged that the accused was under the influence of alcohol and was intoxicated. He is to appear in court on the 21st of July.

MALE IDENTIFIED IN STANDOFF

24 year-old James Sinclair of 1520 Queen Street East #3 (Town House) was arrested on the 16th of June at 10:16 am this morning just outside the rear area of the buildings located at Queen Street and Gore Street. He has been charged with one count of possession of a weapon for purpose dangerous to public, one count of use of an imitation firearm while committing an offence, two counts of assault with a weapon and one count of breach of a probation order.

Around 4:39 am on the 16th of June City Police responded to a call regarding a male with a gun and shots fired in the area of Gore Street and Queen Street. Officers immediately responded to the area and heard shots being fired and observed a male with a hand gun running in an eastbound direction behind the buildings located at the corner of Gore Street and Manilla Terrace. It is alleged that the accused pointed the firearm at two officers that responded to the initial call. The male was quickly contained to a roof area of buildings along Queen Street East near Gore Street. The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service Emergency Services Unit, police negotiators were deployed during the standoff. Police negotiators were in communication with the male by way of his cell phone and successfully negotiated a safe resolution to the incident. The accused surrendered to the Emergency Services Unit officers at approximately 10:16 am. A blank firing replica pistol and blank ammunition was recovered when the accused surrendered to police.
No one was injured during this incident.
The accused is to appear in bail court on Tuesday the 17th of June at 10:00 am.

City police were also assisted by the Ontario Provincial Police with containment of the area. An area covering sections of Bay Street, Wellington Street East, Queen St., Albert Street East, Gore Street, Tancred Street and Andrew Street were barricaded and closed off to the public and automobile traffic.

The incident remains under investigation.
