FRAUD ALERT

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is reporting the passing of US counterfeit $100 and $20.00 bills at various businesses within the city. The businesses targeted tend to be high traffic areas. Each note that has been passed does not have the same serial number.

The serial numbers are the following:
$100 AB83405R -1996 series
$100 –DB21093000C - 2003 series
$100 – Fl00841579 -2003 Series
$20 – JD18275172B - 2009 Series
$20 – JD18275173B - - 2009 Series
$20 – JD18275174B – 2009 Series

The notes are ink jet copies, poor paper quality. The design should retain three of the following most important security features and are easy to check: a security thread, color shifting ink and a watermark.

Security Thread
Hold the bill up to the light and look for the security thread, or plastic strip that is embedded in the paper and runs vertically up one side of the note. If you look closely, the words “USA TWENTY” or “USA HUNDRED visible along thread from both sides of the note. This thread glows green when held under the ultra violet light.

Color – Shifting Ink
Look at the number “20” in the lower right corner on the face of the note. When you tilt the note up and down the color shifting ink changes color from copper to green.

Watermark
Hold the bill up to the light and look for the watermark, or faint image, similar to the large portrait of President Andrew Jackson. The water mark is part of the paper itself and it can be seen from both sides of the note.
