A 20-year-old is facing multiple charges after allegedly clashing with security guards and police at a local business.

On Oct. 15 at around 7:15 p.m., someone phoned 911 to report a theft and assault at a business in the 0-100 block of Great Northern Road.

Sault Police say when officers arrived at the scene, security staff had a suspect in custody.

“Police took custody of the accused, who refused to identify themselves,” a news release says. “Despite physical resistance and attempt to run away, officers caught up with the accused and they were arrested.”

Upon further investigation, police allege the suspect first left the business at around 6:30 p.m. with several items they didn’t pay for. A short time later, police say the suspect returned to the address and tried to leave with more items — but was stopped by security officers.

“The accused again returned to the business shortly thereafter,” the news release continues. “When asked to leave by security officers, the accused began to assault them by pushing them and grabbing their vest.”

Jersey Belleau is charged with assault, resisting a peace officer and theft under $5,000.

The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Belleau is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
