One person’s holiday shopping spree has come to an end.

Sault Police say they’ve arrested a man who allegedly stole credit and debit cards from two victims and made multiple fraudulent transactions.

The investigation began at around 9:30 a.m. on Dec. 22, when someone phoned 911 to report “the theft — and use — of a victim’s credit and debit cards in the 700 block of Great Northern Road.”

Police say they discovered that the cards and a quantity of cash were stolen from a person’s wallet.

After a suspect was arrested and searched, police say they found another stolen credit card and debit card belonging to a second victim.

“Further investigation revealed these cards had also been used in fraudulent transactions,” says a news release issued today by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service.

Richard Thorne, 46, is charged with:

  • Theft of Credit Card x2
  • Theft Under $5,000
  • Possession of Stolen Credit Card

He was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 24, 2025.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Thorne is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
