The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service issued a news release on Tuesday warning the public about recent “distraction thefts” targeting local senior citizens.
In two recent incidents, thieves have distracted victims before stealing their wallets, police said.
“In the first incident, a suspect sprayed something onto a victim’s jacket at the grocery store—prompting them to remove their jacket and stealing their wallet," police said in the release.
“In the second incident, one suspect distracted a victim loading groceries into their vehicle by showing them there were thumbtacks in their tire.
“Meanwhile, a second suspect stole the victim’s wallet out of their vehicle. The victim was later notified money had been withdrawn from their bank account. The victim recognized the suspect as someone who had been standing close behind them in line at the grocery store,” police said.
Reduce the Risk of Being a Victim
Becoming a victim of theft is never the victim’s fault; however, there are steps you can take to reduce your risk of being victimized:
- Stay aware of your surroundings – Be cautious if a stranger approaches you with an unusual request or points out an issue with your belongings. Thieves often work in pairs or groups to create distractions.
- Keep your belongings secure – Carry your wallet in a front pocket, crossbody bag, or a zippered compartment instead of a purse or open pocket, which are easier targets.
- Limit access to your valuables – When shopping, keep your purse closed and securely fastened, and never leave it unattended in a shopping cart or vehicle.
- Be mindful at checkout – Be aware of who is around you while entering your PIN at a store or ATM. Cover the keypad when entering your PIN to prevent others from seeing it.
- Trust your instincts – If something feels off, create distance, be firm in declining unnecessary help, and move to a more public or secure area.
- Lock your vehicle – Even when loading groceries or briefly stepping away, keep your doors locked to prevent quick thefts.
- Beware of staged distractions – If someone points out a stain on your clothing, an issue with your car, or asks for directions, be cautious before diverting your attention.
- Report suspicious behaviour – If you notice anyone lingering too close or acting suspiciously in public spaces, notify store staff or contact police.
