An officer with Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is facing sexual assault charges after an independent police watchdog found reasonable grounds to believe the officer had committed criminal offences.
Sault Ste. Marie Police Service Sgt. Marc Dubie has been charged with two counts of sexual assault after an investigation by the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) concluded there was sufficient evidence to proceed with the charges, which were laid against the officer in relation to incidents involving two women in December 2022.
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates police conduct that may have resulted in either death, serious injury, sexual assault or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
The charge has yet to be tested in court, and Dubie is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
“As the matter is before the courts, and in consideration of the fair trial interests of the accused, the SIU will not provide further comment on the investigation,” said the release.
Dubie is required to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sault Ste. Marie on Jan. 8, 2024.
