A Sault Ste. Marie man pleaded guilty last week to possession of child pornography.
Timothy Daniel Allen, 38, will return to a Sault Ste. Marie courtroom early next year to set a sentencing date.
On Nov. 12, he was convicted of having numerous child pornography videos and images when he appeared in the Ontario Court of Justice. The offence occurred on March 11.
Prosecutor Matthew Caputo provided the court with brief facts surrounding the offence. He told Justice Heather Mendes that officers in the city police technical crime investigation unit learned on Jan. 8 that a Goulais Avenue man was downloading child pornography.
After obtaining a search warrant, they showed up at Allen's residence on Feb. 27, the assistant Crown attorney said.
The cops located material that met the definition of child pornography, and seized a number of devices, Caputo said, indicating he "will go into more detail at sentencing."
The prosecutor and defence lawyer Anthony Orazietti indicated his client is currently undergoing treatment.
Caputo said the Crown will then decide if it's going ahead with the rest of the charges Allen faces.
He also is charged with possession of child pornography on March 11 for the purpose of distribution. On Feb. 28, city police reported the accused had been arrested after officers found three "life-like dolls of children which are intended for a sexual purpose."
They made the discovery during the execution of the search warrant at his west-end residence.
The investigation was led by the service's tech crime unit, which is a member of the Ontario Provincial Strategy to Protect Children from Sexual Abuse and Exploitation on the Internet.
A May 8 news report named Allen as one of two Sault men charged in a major province-wide child exploitation investigation.
He was among 64 people arrested during Project Aquatic – a number the Ontario Provincial Police called "staggering." The project took place between Feb. 19 and Feb. 29.
Allen was charged with two counts of possession of child pornography. Mendes ordered a pre-sentence report.
The sentence date will be set on Jan. 20, 2025.
