Police say they found open container of alcohol in vehicle after concerned citizen call

The 44-year-old driver faces impaired charges as a result.

44-year-old Randal Giguere faces impaired charges after an incident earlier this week, Sault Ste. Marie Police said in a news release issued today.

Police say they responded to a call around 9 p.m. on Saturday evening of a possible impaired driver at Sault Area Hospital. 

Upon arrival, police spoke with the accused when they saw an open container of alcohol and determined that the accused was impaired. Police say the 44-year-old refused to take a breathalyzer. 

As a result, he was arrested and charged.

The full release is as follows: 

On Feb. 5, 2022, officers with Patrol Services charged 44-year-old Randal Giguere with operation while impaired – alcohol and/or drug.

Around 9 p.m. officers attended Sault Area Hospital for a possible impaired driver. Upon arrival, officers approached the vehicle and identified the driver as the accused. Upon speaking with the accused, officers observed an open container of alcohol and developed grounds to believe the accused’s ability to operate a motor vehicle was impaired by alcohol.

Officers attempted to administer an approved screening device demand, but the accused refused. He was arrested. Further investigation determined the accused is a prohibited driver.

He is charged with,

  • Operation While Impaired – Alcohol or Drug
  • Failure or Refusal to Comply with Demand
  • Operation While Prohibited

He was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on Apr. 4, 2022.
