Police lay arson charge in North Street fire investigation

Police say the accused fled from and struck officers prior to his arrest

Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services responded to a report of smoke coming out of the second story of an abandoned house in the 200 block of North Street just before 5 p.m. Sunday.

A Sault man has been charged with arson following a fire at an abandoned North Street house.

Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services responded to a report of smoke coming from a the second story of an abandoned house in the 200 block of North Street shortly before 5 p.m. Sunday. 

In a press release issued this morning, police say when they arrived on scene, officers witnessed someone climb out of a second floor window and flee the area.

Police say they attempted an arrest and the accused resisted, striking officers.

Police allege the accused had thrown a jar at a victim around 2 p.m. in a separate incident.

As a result, 30-year-old Gabriel Nadeau was charged with arson, being unlawfully in a dwelling, assault with a weapon, two counts of assaulting a peace officer and two counts of resisting a peace officer. He was held for bail court.
