Two suspected thieves were arrested yesterday after one of them allegedly threatened a person with a machete.

At around 2:15 p.m. on Nov. 12, someone phoned 911 to report a person being threatened with a weapon in the 400 block of Great Northern Road.

“An investigation revealed the two accused were stealing items from outside a business when confronted by the victim,” says a news release from the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service.

One of the suspects threatened the person with a machete, police say, before both individuals left the business with a cart full of stolen items worth more than $3,900.

The victim was not injured, police say.

Cecil Cuthbertson, 49, is charged with assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and theft under $5,000.

Brandon Zimmerman, 21, is charged with theft under $5,000.

Both suspects were released on undertakings and are scheduled back in court on Jan. 20, 2025.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and both suspects are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
