Update to Fatal Pedestrian/Motor Vehicle Collision from the 5th of January, 2008: On the 5th of January 2008 at approximately 8:35 pm Sault Ste.
Update to Fatal Pedestrian/Motor Vehicle Collision from the 5th of January, 2008:

On the 5th of January 2008 at approximately 8:35 pm Sault Ste. Marie Police Services and Sault Ambulance Services attended to a fatal pedestrian/motor vehicle collision on Goulais Avenue just south of Third Line West. The collision has claimed the life of 16 year-old Miranda Palin of Sault Ste. Marie. Preliminary investigation has revealed that Miranda Palin was walking northbound on Goulais Avenue in the northbound traffic lane with another 14 year-old female when she was struck by a Pontiac vehicle that was tavelling northbound on Goulais Avenue. Miranda Palin was transported to the Sault Area Hospital where she was pronounced deceased. The other 14 year-old female was also transported to hospital by ambulance for treatment of minor injuries to her arm and released. It is undetermined at this time if she was actually struck by the vehicle. The lone driver of the vehicle, a 75 year-old male did not sustain any injuries.
At this time no charges have been laid and the investigation is continuing.

The following three persons will be appearing in bail court this morning:

Officers from Investigation Services have laid some charges in connection to the pepper spray and robbery incidents which occurred in December of 2007. The following two males have been arrested so far. The investigation is continuing and more charges may be laid.
1) A 17 year-old male was arrested on the 4th of January at 1:36 at an east-end residence and charged with three counts of robbery, three counts of possession of a weapon for purpose dangerous to public, and three counts of breach of probation under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

2) A 16 year-old male was arrested on the 4th of January at the city police station and charged with one count of robbery, and one count of breach of probation under the Youth Criminal Justice Act in relation to the incidents. This male was also charged with one count of break, enter and commit, possession of property obtained by crime and another count of breach of probation in relation to a break and enter to a room at the Quality Inn on the 29th of December when it is alleged that the accused stole a LCD flat screen television from the room.
It is alleged that on the 13th of December 2007 the accused, along with two other male youths, approached a 29 year-old male victim on Trunk Road around 1:20 am and demanded money from the victim. The victim was threatened with pepper spray, punched and then sprayed in the face area. Nothing was taken from the victim. The victim was treated at the hospital for non-life threatening injuries. It is further alleged that on the 15th of December around 12:40 am the accused that was with a group of youths on Cambridge Place, when two of the male youths, one being the accused, approached a 20 year-old male victim that was walking in the area and also demanded money and property from him. It is alleged that accused threatened and pepper sprayed the victim in the face area and stole a CD player from him. The other male youth while carrying a bat, punched the victim in the face and grabbed his back pack and went through it. A small amount of cash was taken from the victim. This victim was also treated at hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
On the 16th of December at approximately 11:00 pm the two accused approached three youths that were walking on Chambers Avenue and robbed them by knifepoint. A small amount of cash was stolen, and a necklace was ripped from the neck area of one of the female victims. No injuries were reported in this incident.

Additional charges to the pepper spray and robbery incidents:

The 16 year-old male youth was also charged with two additional counts of robbery and breach of probation for his involvement with the robberies on the on the 13th and 15th of December as earlier released.

Possession & Trafficking

48 year-old Susan McMillan of #317-26 Terry Fox Place and 24 year-old Valerie Agawa of #1- 124 Andrew Street were arrested on the 5th of January at 8:25 pm at #1-124 Andrew Street and both charged with one count each of possession for the purpose of trafficking in a controlled drug or substance. It is alleged that on the 5th of January at 7:43 pm city police attended to this address for a possible fight disturbance. When Officers attended and checked the apartment they located a Ziploc bag with approximately 344 grams of cocaine inside the residence. The accused Valerie Agawa is to appear in bail court this morning. The accused Susan McMillan is to appear in court on the 11th of February.

Sexual Interference & Assault

A 72 year-old male was arrested on the 4th of January at 2:50 pm at the city police station and charged with one count of sexual interference and one count of sexual assault. It is alleged that between 1997 and 2001, the accused touched a young female relative in an inappropriate manner on approximately ten occasions. The name of the accused is not being released to protect the identity of the victim. The accused is to appear in court on the 4th of February.

The following break and enters were reported over the weekend;

1) A residence on Mount Pleasant Crescent was entered some time between 7:30 am and 5 pm on the 4th of January. Some money was reported stolen.

2) An apartment on Pine Street was entered sometime between the 14th of December and the 5th of January. It is not known what was stolen at this time.

The following mischief reports were taken over the weekend;

1) On the 6th of January a vehicle parked at a residence on Winfield Drive had the door lock damaged on a when it was forcibly entered.

2) A mailbox at a residence on Old Goulais Bay Road was damaged sometime overnight on the 5th-6th of January.

3) A residence on Elizabeth Street was spray painted overnight on the 5th of January.
