Man accused of attempting to steal catalytic converter

Police have arrested Jacob Bussineau following an incident that took place on the afternoon of Nov. 9.

A news release issued by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service alleges that the 31-year-old accused fled after attempting to steal a catalytic converter from a vehicle.

At the time of his arrest, the accused was riding a stolen bicycle and was in possession of a number of tools, including a saw, police say.

Full text of the release follows:

On November 12, 2021 officers with Patrol Services charged 31-year-old Jacob Bussineau with theft and mischief under $5,000.

On Nov. 9, 2021 around 4:30 p.m., a victim observed the accused attempting to cut something from under their vehicle, causing damage to the vehicle. When the victim approached the vehicle, the accused left the area. Police were notified and the investigation determined the accused was attempting to remove the catalytic converter from the vehicle.

On Nov. 12, 2021 around 1 a.m., officers observed the accused in the 200 block of Great Northern Road riding a bicycle and he was arrested. A subsequent search of the accused found him to be in possession of multiple tools, including a saw. Further investigation determined the bicycle was stolen.

He is charged with theft under $5,000, mischief under $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime, possession of break-in tools and two counts of failure to comply with a probation order to keep the peace and be of good behaviour.

He was held for bail court and later released. He is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 13, 2021.
