Afternoon news At 9:05 this morning patrol officers arrested a young offender who was wanted for 3 accounts of assault stemming from a domestic incident. The same accused person was also wanted for possession of stolen property.

At 9:05 this morning patrol officers arrested a young offender who was wanted for 3 accounts of assault stemming from a domestic incident. The same accused person was also wanted for possession of stolen property. No serious injuries were reported in this incident. The accused will appear in bail court on Monday December 23rd.

A 36 year old male was arrested early this afternoon and charged with theft under $5000, assault and 5 counts of breach of probation as a result of a domestic incident. The male will appear in bail court on Monday December 23rd.

41 year old James Syrette was arrested and charged with theft under $5000 after it was alleged that he stole a pair of gloves from the Sears store in the Station Mall. Syrette was also on probation at the time of the incident, failing to keep the peace and being of good behaviour. The accused will appear in court on Monday January 27th, 2014.

Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose

On December 19th, 2013 at approximately 7 p.m. patrol officers from the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service arrested 55 year old male Edward Atherton of James Street for being in possession of a weapon for a purpose dangerous to the public.

It is alleged that Mr. Atherton was observed by Station Mall security walking through Station Mall while openly displaying a knife. 

Police located Mr. Atherton inside the Mall where he was still holding a pocket knife in his hand with two of its knife blades extended.

At the time of the incident the Station Mall was very busy with holiday shoppers. 

No one was targeted or injured, and the accused Atherton was arrested by officers without incident.

Mr. Atherton is scheduled to appear in court January 20th, 2014.

A 54 year old female was arrested on a warrant as a result of breaching a release document. It is alleged that the accused harassed her ex- husband by calling him 3 times while being on a release not to molest, harass or physically interfere with him. She will be appearing in court on January 22nd.

30 year old Ryan Godson-Roy of Queen Street West was arrested by members of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Drug Enforcement Unit and will be appearing in bail court tomorrow. It is alleged that on the 19th of December the accused was found to be in possession of 34 grams of marijuana packaged in various sized quantities a cell phone and cash. At the time he was on a conditional sentence order with a condition to not possess any controlled substance or drug paraphernalia and on a probation order to keep the peace and be of good behaviour, not to possess any non prescribed drugs and not to possess any drug paraphernalia. He is charged with one count of possession of controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, 3 counts of breach of probation and is facing an allegation of breach of a conditional sentence order.

A 20 year old male will be appearing in bail court charged with breach of a recognizance of bail. It is alleged that on December 19th the accused contacted his ex girlfriend and left her two voice mail messages despite being on a bail court release document to abstain from communicating with her. He is charged with one count of breach of a recognizance.

On December 19th police stopped a vehicle on Glasgow Avenue. Upon speaking with the driver officers noticed an odor of alcoholic beverage on his breath. Further investigation revealed that the accused was prohibited from driving by a court order. The accused was arrested and transported to the station where breath tests were conducted. Steven Francis, age 43, of McKenzie Street was charged with driving over the legal limit of alcohol in his blood and driving while prohibited. He will appear in court on January 20th.

A 43 year old male was arrested for a number of sexual offences. It is alleged that between August of 2011 and December 2013 the accused was involved in numerous sexual acts with his girlfriend’s daughter. The victim was between 14 and 16 years old at the time of these events. The accused had sexual intercourse with the victim numerous times and forced her to perform oral sex on him. If the victim refused to comply the accused would assault the victim by punching her and grabbing her. He further threatened to kill her if she ever disclosed this information. At the time of his arrest the accused was found to be breaching a release document by not residing where he was supposed to. In addition he was on probation with a condition to keep the peace and be good. The accused is charged with sexual assault, sexual interference, invitation to sexual touching, sexual exploitation, assault, threatening breach of a release order and breach of probation. He will be appearing in bail court this morning. His name is not being released to protect the identity of the accused.

On December 20th at approximately 1:30 a.m., police responded to a single motor vehicle collision at Dacey Road and Terry Fox Place. Upon arrival the driver of the vehicle was identified as 31 year old Justin Richards of Railroad Avenue. Officers observed signs of impairment and the accused was arrested and transported to the police station. He will be appearing in court on January 20th charged with one count of impaired operation of a motor vehicle and one count of driving with over the legal blood alcohol limit.
