SSMPS Investigating a Homicide

In the evening hours of the 8th of August the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service received a 911 call for police assistance.  

Officers from Patrol Services attended at a residence in the 300 block of Lake Street and located a deceased person.

The officers requested the assistance of Investigation Services.

Late last night the death was deemed to be suspicious in nature. 

Officers from Investigation Services have been working continually on this investigation and have now confirmed that the death is a homicide.

The victim is an adult female with obvious signs of injury.

Officers from Investigation Services are continuing to work on this investigation.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service would like to assure the public that this is not a random act of violence.

No further details will be released at this time pending the investigation.

A break in was reported to City Police today from the 600 block of Albert Street West. Sometime between August 7th and today, thieves removed an air conditioner and climbed through a window to gain access to the residence. An XBox 360, a WII system, contollers and games were all stolen.

One male for bail & 2 break and enters

Yesterday afternoon just before 3 pm officers located a 32-year old male who was wanted in relation for a domestic related incident.  It is alleged that on the 25th of July the accused attended at the residence of his ex-girlfriend and entered the residence while she was not home.  Once in the residence it is alleged that the accused ripped two phone cords out and also left the residence with three Bell receiver boxes. The accused has been charged with one count of break and enter, once count of mischief under $5,000and one count of theft under $5,000.  The accused will appear in a bail court this morning.  

Just before 12 noon on the 8th of August a home owner on Beverly Street reported that a shed had been broken into. It is unknown what was taken in the break in.

Yesterday afternoon a second homeowner on Beverly Street reported that their shed had also been broken into. A grey men’s 18 speed bike and a ladies blue ladies 18 speed bike were taken

On August 8th at 4:53 pm Detectives arrested and charged Geoffery Chamings, age 47 of 181 James St. Apt. 4 for Break and Enter and Aggravated Assault. Officers had learned that on March 24th, 2013 Chamings allegedly broke into a home in the 200 block of Albert Ste. East and assault the male resident there. The victim required treatment at the hospital for their injures. Chamings will appear in court on August 9th.

On August 9th at 12:40 am Patrol Officers attended at a residence in the 1500 block of Trunk Rd. for a disturbance. Officers spoke to Steven Stunell, age 19 of 1549 Trunk Rd. Unit 6. Officers noted that Stunell was intoxicated. A police records check revealed he was on a Recognizance of Bail with a condition not to consume alcohol. Officers arrested and charged him with breaching this condition. He will appear in court on Aug. 9th.

On August 8th after 10:00 pm Police were advised that Steven Kozak, age 19 of 298 Shannon Rd. had not returned home in violation of a curfew imposed in previous court order. Officers arrested and charged him with Breaching his Recognizance. He will appear in court on Aug. 9th.
