A 35-year-old man is facing impaired driving charges after allegedly speeding away from police when officers tried to pull him over early Sunday morning.

At around 3:30 a.m. on Sept. 24, Sault Police say they received a 911 call about a driver “swerving and nearly hitting curbs” in the area of Wellington Street West and Carmen’s Way.

“Upon locating the vehicle, officers attempted a traffic stop but the vehicle did not pull over and began driving away at a high rate of speed,” says a news release issued today by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service.

The vehicle eventually pulled into a driveway in the 1200 block of Wellington Street East, police say.

“Officers spoke with the driver, who identified as the accused, and developed grounds to believe their ability to operate a motor vehicle was impaired by alcohol,” the release states. “The accused provided multiple breath samples into an approved screening device and all results were above the legal limit.”

Rom Gidayawan is charged with:

  • Operation While Impaired (Drugs and/or Alcohol)
  • Operation While Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration (80+)

He was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled back in court on Oct. 16.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Gidayawan is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
