A 45-year-old man has been charged with attacking another person with a hammer.

Sault Police say the east-end assault occurred at around 10:30 p.m. on June 12, in the area of Queen and Millwood streets.

“Officers located the accused coming out of a wooded area, and they were arrested,” says a news release issued today by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service. “A search of the accused found them to be in possession of a knife and a pellet gun resembling a firearm.”

Police say the suspect knew the victim, who did not require medical attention.

Ronald Derasp is charged with:

  • Assault With Weapon
  • Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
  • Carrying Concealed Weapon

He was released on an undertaking and is scheduled back in court on Aug. 12.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Derasp is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
