An attempt by the Sault Ste. Marie IMET team to clean a property resulted in an assault charge against a 47-year-old man.
Shortly after clean-up attempts began on Nov. 30, a man left the residence at 282 Wellington St. West and threatened officers with a hatchet, according to a news release.
Officers were able to convince the man to drop his weapon, which he did, but he continued to resist during arrest attempts. A subsequent search of the man found them to be in possession of approximately .75 grams of a substance believed to be methamphetamine, the release said.
Richard Broadbent is charged with assault a peace officer, assault with a weapon, resist a police officer, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and possession of a controlled substance, the release said.
The accused is in custody pending a bail hearing.
Following the arrest, by-law officers were able to clean up the property without incident.

Marie building and by-Law, other local enforcement agencies, as well as housing services division of the District Social Services Administration Boards. The enforcement-oriented team brings together all agencies with enforcement mandates, with the support of other partner agencies, to develop action plans to address a variety of community issues and concerns.
