On Sunday morning, city police officers charged a 25-year-old man with impaired driving, dangerous operation, and possession of a schedule I substance.
At around 3:20 a.m., a 911 caller reported a vehicle driving “very slowly but erratically, including into and out of snowbanks,” around Wellington Street East and Bruce Street, police said in a news release.
“Officers were dispatched to the area where they located the vehicle turning into a parking lot in the 200 block of Wellington Street West, striking a snowbank as it did so.”
Upon speaking with the driver, officers developed grounds to believe his ability to operate a motor vehicle was impaired by drugs and/or alcohol.
“The accused provided a breath sample into an approved screening device, which determined their blood alcohol concentration was zero.”
He then participated in a Standardized Field Sobriety Test and performed poorly. Police arrested the man, who was searched. Police found approximately 0.6 grams of suspected cocaine.
Cameron Mackenzie was transported to the Police Services Building where a Drug Recognition Expert performed an evaluation, which determined he was impaired by drug(s).
Mackenzie is charged with:
- Operation While Impaired – Drug and/or Alcohol
- Operation While Impaired – Blood Drug Concentration
- Dangerous Operation
- Possession of Schedule I Substance
He was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 6, 2025.
None of the allegations have been tested in court and Mackenzie is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
