'Amazing' Sault swimmer adds to huge medal haul at Special Olympics meet

'He's got a beautiful heart and he’s dedicated to anything he chooses to put his mind to': Kevin Possamai won three golds and one silver at recent regional meet in North Bay

The Sault’s Kevin Possamai won three gold medals and one silver medal at a Special Olympics regional swim meet in North Bay April 27.

“It feels good,” Possamai smiled during an interview with SooToday on Monday, proudly wearing the medals.

As a member of the Sault Sharks swim team, Possamai won medals in the 25m front, 25m backstroke, 50m backstroke and 50m breaststroke events.

“I’m very proud of him,” said Joann Harman, Special Olympics Sault Ste. Marie community coordinator and Possamai’s coach.

Possamai, 47, has been involved with Special Olympics since he was 14.

He has swam competitively and won medals in swimming for over 20 years and has also won medals in track and field events at the national level and in softball at the provincial level.

“He’s got a whole bagful of medals at home,” Harman said.

He swims every Friday at the John Rhodes Community Centre Pool and is still involved with softball and bowling.

Getting ready to enjoy softball this summer, Possamai works Monday through Friday at the Habitat For Humanity Sault Ste. Marie & Area ReStore on White Oak Drive East.

He helps to put couches and other furniture pieces on display at the ReStore’s showroom and carries merchandise out to customers’ vehicles.

He also keeps busy working at Possamai Construction.

“I think Kevin’s an amazing man,” Harman said.

“He’s got a beautiful heart and he’s dedicated to anything he chooses to put his mind to. He’s never without a smile.”
