The coolest way to spend the longest day

Do you like live music? Skateboarding? Free stuff? If the answer is a YES!, you’re not going to want to miss this!

SooToday.com, Tidal Records, The City of Sault Ste. Marie and a whole bunch of wicked community partners have teamed up to bring you an afternoon filled with local bands, skateboard competitions and more. Kicking off at 3 p.m. on Tuesday June 21, Go Skate Day SSM will feature free skateboard lessons for inexperienced skaters, cool giveaways and give the average person a glimpse into the thriving skateboard park and scene.

There will be a bunch of vendors on hand to check out some wicked swag.

Gnarly Bistro will be on hand to provide refreshments for those who get a hunger on. You can check out all the action at the public skateboard park located adjacent to the John Rhodes Arena. The event will end when the sun goes down around 9 p.m. but we definitely encourage you to hop on your board and skate all day!

Every year on June 21, skaters around the world gather at their favourite spots to celebrate the awesomeness, creativity, and love of the sport by hitting the park in order to go skateboarding. It’s called Go Skate Day, and it’s the best day of the year.

Founded by the International Association of Skateboard Companies (IASC) on June 21, 2004, Go Skateboarding Day began with a few simple sessions and barbeques held in Southern California. Since then it has grown into a worldwide holiday, celebrated by everyone from passionate skaters to those who are simply inspired by the sport. This year’s event promises to be an absolutely epic ordeal. To take part, all you need to do is head down to our local park and check it out!

The Superior Community Skatepark Association (SCSA) is a non-profit community group that was developed to focus on the needs of Sault Ste Marie and Algoma area skateboarders.

The group was incorporated in 2003 and was instrumental in organizing the youth’s movement and desire to build a skatepark facility in partnership with the City of Sault Ste Marie.

As a temporary fix, the SCSA with community partners built a wooden skatepark that lasted many years and hosted many events.

The ultimate goal of the association was to construct a world-class permanent concrete facility.  Phase 1 of the concrete Sault Skatepark was successfully opened adjacent the John Rhodes Community Centre in June of 2009.  Phase 2 has yet to be built, but you can contribute to the cause by supporting events like Go Skate Day or by donation.

“Why not choose the longest day of the year to celebrate and share with everyone the sport we are so passionate about. It just makes sense. Come join us in building a great community and a bigger skatepark!” – SCSA President Travis McCormack

As a community of skateboarders we feel blessed to have the support and encouragement from our community including Sootoday.com, Wacky Wings, NG Cash & Carry, Lumeo, Tidal Records, Swampwood, Subway, Ciniplex, SCSA, Holy Cow Ice Cream, Harveys, Great Lakes  Honda, Healthy Kids and more
