VIDEO: Check out what's cooking at this downtown brewery

You already knew about the beer, but now OutSpoken Brewery is out to be famous for its food as well

When a new restaurant pops up in the Sault, it doesn't take us long to pop by for a look.

It took a little longer this time around, but now that OutSpoken Brewery's new owners have their kitchen up and running, SooToday cameras finally had a chance to check out what's cooking at the Queen Street East location.

What can you expect?

"I'm starting with simple stuff: nachos, wings, and tacos," says chef Nigel Tenhagen, who came over to OutSpoken from Peace.

"You have to try the tacos. I'm pretty happy with them. They're braised beef tacos, phenomenal. 10/10 on those. And the wings — I'm also really happy with the wings."

But it's the nachos that have been a labour of love for the longtime Saultite.

"The nachos are a funny thing," said Tenhagen.

"I had to develop a properly layered nacho on the fly. It happened, but it's a crazy thing that requires a lot of work. They are properly layered and have been popular."

When asked what keeps Tenhagen passionate about the food service industry, he admits: "It's partly the pressure, partly the people, but mostly it's the wow factor.

"I like being able to produce food that I'm proud of, food that when it hits the table makes the guest go, wow, I'm glad I ordered this. This is going to be good."

Full disclosure: Jeff Elgie, one of the owners of OutSpoken, is also the president and CEO of Village Media, which operates SooToday and other hyperlocal news websites across Ontario as well as the recently launched SPACES.
