When it comes to getting a good night’s sleep, having the right mattress is imperative to providing the comfort needed for restful and restorative sleep.
That means buying a mattress is a major purchase, and not because of cost alone. According to the Sleep Council of Canada, you will be using your mattress for up to 12 years before replacing it, so it’s important to choose one that’s right for you.
“A mattress averages $1,000, and you’re going to be using it every single day at least six to eight hours every day,” said Paul Degilio, owner of Sleepy’s Mattress Express in Sault Ste. Marie.
In business for 25 years, offering the best brands like Tempur-Pedic, Serta and Sealy, Paul knows the importance of having the right mattress, and said having the wrong one could cause restless sleep, aggravate pain from pre-existing medical issues or cause things like a stiff back or neck, to name a few. Over time, consistent lack of sleep can affect your mood, productivity and affect your overall health.
There are many factors to consider when deciding what mattress is right for you
When choosing the right mattress, nothing replaces the in-store experience of trying them first-hand. That said, there are many factors to consider in the decision-making process, Paul said. First, disclose your health issues to the salesperson. If you suffer from fibromyalgia or arthritis, for example, their expertise about different mattresses and their benefits will be helpful in determining the best one for you.
Another important decision, Paul said, is whether you want a coil or foam mattress. While coil and foam are both good mattresses, coil mattresses are a little bouncier but still offer excellent support. However, it does not always provide uniform support to the entire body so if you suffer from joint or back pain, this may not be the mattress for you.
Memory foam mattresses contour to the shape of your body and align to the curvature of your spine. This creates pressure relief which will help to alleviate things like joint and back pain.
“If you lay down on a coil mattress that coil compresses and pushes back up giving you upward pressure… whereas when you get a foam mattress, like a Tempur for example, no coil means no upward pressure, so you may toss and turn less and you may sleep a little better,” he said, adding that a great alternative is to buy a coil mattress with a Pillow top or Euro top.
While there are many myths out there about what mattress you “should have” for a specific issue, Paul said, there are no golden rules.
“I can have someone with a bad back that needs a firm bed, the next one needs a medium, the next one needs a soft, everyone is different,” Paul said. “You can have two people with the same type of injury and one wants a firm, one wants a medium, it depends on factors like your body shape or your size.”
Adjustable beds, also called lifestyle beds, have become a popular choice for ultimate comfort
In the past two years, Paul said adjustable beds have become extremely popular with people having spent more time at home. With Zoom meetings and virtual school, they provide the ultimate in comfort with the ability to tailor to the sleep needs of the individual.
With these beds, Paul explains its’s the bases that adjust, and the head or the foot of the mattress can be raised or lowered. Some benefits of raising the head is staving off acid reflux, less snoring and a better sleep. When the feet are raised, it can help circulation, restless leg syndrome and sciatica.
Paul said, these type of mattresses are also ideal for people who have different sleep needs. “You can have two adjustable bases and beds, side by-side, where one is soft and one is hard, and when you make the beds it looks like one king-size bed.”
