Look out Sault Ste. Marie!

The Inaugural New Year’s Eve Puck Drop is happening December 31.

Back in March, the community was given the chance to vote between two icons for New Year’s Eve: a ball drop or a puck drop.

“We wanted to create excitement in the community for this new tradition. Normally a ball drop has been synonymous with New Year's Eve festivities around the world. Alternatively, a puck drop offers a fresh twist on the classic tradition that is inspired by our city's love for hockey. Both options would see either a ball or puck suspended approximately 80 feet in the air above the Downtown Plaza,” explained Brent Lamming, Director of Community Services.

Votes were cast, and the puck won! The puck was made from locally sourced steel and constructed by the city’s Public Works Department.

“The puck will be dropped two times on New Year’s Eve, at 8 p.m. and at midnight, so all ages can enjoy the fun and excitement,” said a city spokesperson.

There will be lots of other entertainment for all ages this New Year’s Eve, beginning at 6 p.m. with Shari Tallon, who will entertain the little ones in the crowd, followed by Fun and Funner, family entertainment favourites, at 7 p.m.

After the family Puck Drop at 8 p.m., entertainment for the adults begins with Golden Scoundrels at 8:15 and ABBA Soo finishing off the evening from 10 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. The final Puck Drop will count down to midnight to say good-bye to 2024 at the Sault Ste. Marie Downtown Plaza.

“There will also be lots of food and specialty beverage stations at the Plaza, and the skating rink will be open as well,” said the spokesperson. “We know everyone in the community will love this exciting night of music, entertainment, refreshments, and festivities.”

Don’t miss the Inaugural New Year’s Eve Puck Drop at Sault Ste. Marie’s Downtown Plaza, from 6 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. December 31. The evening is free to attend.
