Sault Ste Marie is gearing up for an exciting and meaningful event that will make a positive impact on the community. The Community Strong Race Weekend (CSRW), co-organized by Algoma Family Services Foundation (AFS Foundation) and the Sault Ste Marie YMCA (SSM YMCA), is set to take place on June 24 and 25.
This two-day running event aims to raise desperately needed funds and bring awareness to physical and mental health issues, with all proceeds going towards AFS Foundation and the SSM YMCA.
In Sault Ste Marie and the Algoma District, one in five youths struggle with their mental health, and an equal number cannot afford access to basic recreation.
The CSRW seeks to address these issues by providing much-needed resources for mental and physical health programs for children, youth, and families. Due to limited provincial funding, these programs would otherwise not be available.
The event organizers are inviting everyone in the community to participate and show their support.
The highlight of the event is a two-day running extravaganza, featuring a 5-kilometre family-friendly colour run and a 10-kilometre run on Saturday, followed by a half-marathon and newly certified Boston Marathon Qualifier on Sunday. These races will take place in the heart of the downtown core, with this year's starting point at City Hall.
The 5-kilometre colour run promises to be a fun-filled experience for the whole family. Participants will be doused in vibrant colours as they make their way through the course, creating a lively and joyful atmosphere. It will be an excellent opportunity for families to spend quality time together while supporting a worthy cause.
For the more adventurous and seasoned runners, the 10-kilometer, half-marathon, and marathon offers a challenge that will test their endurance and determination. The scenic route through the downtown area provides runners with a unique and inspiring backdrop.
By registering for this event, you are not only embarking on a fulfilling personal endeavour but also making a significant difference in the lives of others. The funds raised during the CSRW will be shared equally between AFS Foundation and the SSM YMCA. These organizations play a vital role in the community by providing essential services such as mental health programs, access to recreation for disadvantaged youth, support for seniors and programming for the entire family.
All money raised during this event will remain local, ensuring that the impact is felt directly within the community. Your contribution will help create a stronger support system for those struggling with mental health issues and provide opportunities for children to attend camps, learn to swim, and engage in recreational activities that they might not otherwise have access to.
