Jewellery plays such an important part in the life of a couple, from the proposal to the big day, to the yearly anniversary celebrations that follow.

Engagement rings and wedding bands carry such significance; not only are they a thing of beauty, they are symbolic and deeply meaningful, tied to key moments, feelings and memories in our lives.

For newer couples, this timeline can help keep you on track—and even function as a heads-up for a few steps you may not have thought of. There are some great tips for seasoned couples here too, to help you care for these cherished pieces that mean so much.

THE COUNTDOWN

2-4 months before the wedding: Select your wedding bands

It is generally recommended that you choose your wedding band 2-4 months before the big day. If the band is currently in stock, it can be sized in the store and it can even be ready for you the same day you choose it.

If it comes from one of the store’s suppliers and your size has to be ordered, allow yourself at least 2-3 weeks. If you decide to go the custom-made route for your wedding band, leaving 4-8 weeks is recommended.

1-2 months before the wedding: Bridal party gifts and gifts exchanged between the bride and groom

Be sure to leave yourself ample time to choose some thoughtful gifts for your bridal party, as these will be keepsakes they hold onto for many years. Savoy’s Jewellers offers many options, and you can get your items engraved, making your gift even more personal. Keep in mind that engraving can take a week to be completed, so shopping a bit earlier is recommended.

As a groom, you may want to get a gift for your bride-to-be. Several timeless options exist, including a stunning tennis bracelet, a pair of diamond earrings, a necklace or possibly a watch. If you need help with suggestions, staff are always happy to make recommendations.

Brides-to-be who wish to find a gift for the groom can’t go wrong with an elegant watch, a bracelet or a chain.

1 week before the wedding: Freshen up your engagement ring

If your engagement ring is made of white gold and you have been wearing it for a while, you can freshen it up before the big day.

Have it rhodium-plated the week before the wedding; this will ensure it looks bright and matches your wedding band.

A few days before the wedding: Get your jewellery cleaned

A few days before the wedding, make sure to stop by the store and get your engagement ring and wedding jewellery cleaned. This will ensure optimal sparkle—something you’ll be glad for on the big day as it will show both in person and in those all-important photos.

This is actually good advice for anyone who is in the wedding party and for wedding guests too. Everyone, including guests, spends a lot of time choosing the right outfits and accessories for these important milestone events; it only makes sense that their jewellery look its best too.

After the big day

Did you know that you can get your engagement ring and wedding band soldered together into one piece? It’s just one of the many services a jeweller can provide.

To keep your ring looking great, have it cleaned as often as you like. It’s also a good idea to have the prongs checked at least twice a year; there is no need to leave your ring behind as the on-site jewellers can take a quick look for you while you wait.
