Algoma Public Health is calling on residents to nominate local citizens and organizations for the 2023 Public Health Champion Award. Help them recognize the extraordinary achievements of fellow champions for public health.
The call for nominations for the 2023 Public Health Champion closes on March 8, 2023, and winners will be presented at the March 22, 2023, Board of Health meeting.
What Makes Up a Public Health Champion?
A Public Health Champion is anyone who helps to protect and promote community health and advance health equity in Algoma, whether through leading, collaborating, innovating, or fostering opportunities for health for all, together.
A Public Health Champion might be an individual or organization that:
- Makes a difference by working with local government to make positive changes in the community.
- Brings together community partners to work together to improve the overall health of the population in Algoma.
- Empowers groups within the community and helps build equal opportunities for priority populations to attain their full health potential.
These Champions didn’t do it for the recognition, they did it for the impact they could make with the skills and time that they had. Algoma Public Health wants to recognize them regardless – for the hard work they’ve given and the positive mark they’ve created on residents in Algoma.
Who Won Public Health Champion in 2022?
One of last year’s winners included PUC Services Inc., and throughout the pandemic PUC led by example. From donations to rides to promoting vaccine confidence in the workplace.
Lisa Vezeau-Allen was also recognized for her work with Grocers 4 Good (G4G), G4G is a community-centred charity that was started in order to address two key gaps: one being the lack of paid employment opportunities for those with disabilities and barriers, and the second being the lack of food access in the downtown area for those on a fixed income. Using the model of a grocery store, G4G is a program that gives job skill training, paid employment or volunteer work to those who face barriers, or who are chronically underemployed. The grocery store is currently located at 147 Gore Street.
