VIDEO: US Coast Guard conducts training on St. Marys River

Crew conducting 'standard hoist training'

If you noticed a United States Coast Guard helicopter hovering over the St. Marys River yesterday, never fear.

The crew was not responding to an emergency situation of any kind.

It was, in fact, taking part in "standard hoist training with Station Sault Ste. Marie," US Coast Guard representative LT Tyler Carlsgaard told SooToday.

The Coast Guard participates in a number of training exercises, both on land and water.

Coast Guard Sector Sault Ste. Marie recently posted to social media: "We're always glad to practice hoisting with first responders both on land and over water, because like everything else, practice is how you improve -- and personal experience is the best teaching tool of all!"

"Coast Guard Sector Sault Ste. Marie is responsible for all Coast Guard missions on Lake Superior, northern Lakes Michigan and Huron, and surrounding navigable waterways, to include search and rescue, law enforcement, aids to navigation, marine safety, and Homeland Security," it states on the website.
