Officers from East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police were active during the Canada Road Safety Week Traffic Initiative.
Collectively they stopped 2063 vehicles and generated the following numbers:

Speeding Charges – 115

Seat belt charges – 3

Impaired Driving charges – 3

12-Hour Licence Suspensions – 1

Officers conducted RIDE spot checks in the various communities across East Algoma for 57 hours worth of patrol.

Inspector Ron Faulkner and Staff Sergeant Stacey Whaley would like motorists to make every week Road Safety week and use some common sense when operating any motor vehicle or vessel.

SUSPECT VEHICLE LOCATED AND DRIVER CHARGED

(Elliot Lake, Ont.) On Friday, May 18th, 2007 at approximately 4:50 p.m. the East Algoma OPP was advised of a motor vehicle collision on Hillside Drive South of the City of Elliot Lake. While en route the officers received information that the suspect vehicle had left the collision scene.

The vehicle was later located and the driver was charged. Shelley Ann McQUABBIE (40) of Elliot Lake has been charged with Failing to Remain at the Scene of an Accident. McQUABBIE is scheduled to appear in court July 3rd, 2007.

POLICE REQUESTING YOUR ASSISTANCE

(Elliot Lake, Ont.) Police are currently investigating a Fail to Remain Motor Vehicle Collision that occurred on May 14th, 2007 in the parking lot of the local Canadian Tire Store in Elliot Lake. Investigation has revealed that the vehicle was parked unattended from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on the above date. When the damage of the Maroon colored Chevrolet Lumina was noticed by the owner, police were called. The suspect vehicle may be of a light or white color.

IF YOU KNOW WHO DID THIS….. GIVES US A CALL!

(Elliot Lake, Ont.) The East Algoma OPP is currently investigating the report of a mischief to a 2006 Toyota Matrix while it was parked in a driveway on McQuarrie Place in Elliot Lake. The extensive damage occurred sometime between 9:00 p.m. on May 19th, 2007 and 9:15 a.m. on May 20th, 2007.

The front hood, rear and both sides of the vehicle were scratched and words were also scratched into the driver’s door. All 4 tires were slashed and a red substance was sprayed on the driver’s door of the vehicle.

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO STOPPED

(Heyden, Ont.) A Sault Ste Marie man will appear in bail court this morning after his driving on Hwy 17 put lives in danger.

Yesterday at about 2:00 p.m. an officer with the Traffic and Marine Unit was parked in a business on Hwy 17 at Pineshores Road. He saw a southbound car traveling far in excess of the speed limit. The officer started after the car and he also radioed ahead to a second cruiser in Heyden.

The second officer parked the cruiser on the side of the roadway with all the emergency lights flashing. As the offending vehicle approached, the officer stood on the roadway to motion the vehicle to pull over. The vehicle passed other traffic that was slowed and stopping for the officer and continued on at high speed.

Officers caught up to the vehicle at the north city limits and the car was pulled over. A large number of other motorists who witnessed the driving stopped and offered officers statements. Some of the witnesses estimated the speed of the vehicle between 180 and 200 km/h.

A thirty eight (38) year old Sault Ste Marie man has been charged with Dangerous Driving contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada and Failing to Stop for Police Contrary to the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario. He will appear in bail court this morning. The man also had a fourteen (14) year old child in the car with him. The identity of the accused will be released after the necessary court papers are filed this morning.

MINOR INJURIES IN MOOSE-CAR CRASH

(Pancake Bay, Ont.) One person received minor injuries after a car and moose collision in Pancake Bay last night.

At about 11:00 p.m. last night a vehicle was traveling north on Hwy 17 just past the Canadian Carver and Agawa Crafts. The car hit a moose that was on the roadway. One person in the car had small cuts from broken glass but did not require medical treatment.

The moose had to be put down and the car had to be towed back to Sault Ste Marie.

IDENTITY OF DANGEROUS DRIVER RELEASED

(Heyden, Ont.) Sault Ste Marie OPP are now releasing the name of the man who is alleged to have been driving dangerously with a fourteen year old child in his car.

Yesterday at about 2:00 p.m. officers with the OPP Traffic and Marine Unit and members of the Sault Ste Marie OPP Detachment took the man into custody after he eventually stopped the car in Heyden. Thirty eight (38) year old Gary Joseph LEVAR of Prince Charles Crescent in Sault Ste Marie is appearing in bail court this morning.

He faces a charge of Dangerous Driving and Fail to Stop For Police.
