BE A RESPONSIBLE DRIVER THIS EASTER HOLIDAY WEEKEND

(East Algoma Detachment) – The Officers of the Ontario Provincial Police continue to take an active role across the Province in reminding motorists to be cautious and responsible about their driving actions. This Easter holiday weekend will see an increased level of vehicles on this Province’s roadways. With this increase comes a greater risk of collisions.

Staff Sgt. Brian Knowler of the East Algoma Detachment says:

“Traditionally, our first major long weekend where traffic increases substantially is Victoria Day. However, this year, with the expected warm weather and excellent road conditions, we’re expecting that traffic patterns will be closer to a summer weekend than an early spring one. All our officers will be vigilant in watching for aggressive driving behaviours, including speeding, careless driving, and driving after drinking. Our intent is to make this weekend safe and incident free for motorists using the roads in East Algoma.”

Many people will be traveling to visit family or friends and may be in a rush to get to their destination. By doing so, they may forget to use common sense, patience and alertness as part of their driving actions. Officers will be diligently enforcing speed limits and watching for drivers who take unnecessary risks. Drivers not only put themselves at risk, but their innocent passengers, other drivers and pedestrians.

Some of these drivers may be towing recreational vehicles on trailers this weekend. Operators are urged to properly maintain their trailers and ensure all lights are working, trailer connections are secure and tires are checked for proper air pressure.

All OPP Officers from across the Province wish everyone a safe and enjoyable Easter weekend.

Remember, collisions are preventable. By practicing good driving habits, you will be taking the responsibility for protecting and preserving the most precious gift – the gift of life.
