COMMUNITY COOPERATION RESULTS IN CAPTURE OF WANTED CRIMINAL

Heyden, Ont., One man was taken into custody this afternoon after an all morning search of the Lower Island Lake area in Heyden.

This morning at about 5:00 a.m. a resident of the area reported suspicious activity around a seasonal home on Lower Island Lake. Officers responded to the call and found a stolen truck in the area and two houses that had been entered.

The investigation lead officers to another seasonal home where two people were living. Further investigation revealed that the male occupant of the camp was wanted by the Sault Ste Marie City Police Service. The City Police held a warrant for charges of Robbery, Assault Causing Bodily Harm and Threatening.

Shortly before 1:00 p.m. the man surrendered to police. He was taken into custody and turned over to the Sault Ste Marie City Police. This investigation is ongoing and further charges are expected to be laid by Sault Ste Marie OPP. The accused has been identified as twenty three (23) year old Joshua WILSON of no fixed address.

Sault Ste Marie OPP would like to thank the residents of Lower Island Lake and Old Mill Road for their cooperation and assistance this morning. This was another example of the community and the police working together for the protection of our properties.

POLICE SEARCHING UPPER AND LOWER ISLAND LAKE FOR SUSPECTS

(Heyden, Ont.) Sault Ste Marie OPP are investigating another rash of thefts and break and enters in the Heyden area.

This morning at about 5:00 a.m. a resident of Lower Island Lake report seeing someone around and in a resident that is normally not occupied. A call to the owner of the seasonal home indicated that no one should be in the area.

Officers arrived in the area to find a stolen truck on the roadway and a home entered. Officers remain on the scene and in the area of Upper and Lower Island Lake. A police dog is enroute to the area. Residents of that area are being asked to report any unusual activity to the police right away.

Yesterday morning a resident of Old Mill Road in Heyden awoke to find that thieves had stolen his truck out of his driveway. Another resident on MacIntyre Road reported thieves had entered a storage building on his property overnight. He reports the theft of garden equipment from the building.

MULTI VEHICLE CRASH ON MILE HILL

(Heyden, Ont.) Sault Ste Marie OPP were called to Hwy 17 on the Mile Hill yesterday afternoon for a multi vehicle crash.

Yesterday at about 4:30 p.m. five vehicles were southbound headed up the Mile Hill. A slow moving vehicle was at the head of the line and two vehicles started to pass in the southbound passing lane. Two other vehicles went into the oncoming northbound lane to pass all three vehicles. One of the two vehicles, now traveling in the wrong lane, noticed a cyclist coming down the hill.

The vehicle then attempted to pull back into the proper passing lane and then struck a third vehicle traveling the proper lane. The two vehicles came in contact and then struck the other three vehicles. A total of five vehicles were damaged.

The crash is still under investigation and charges are pending. There were no reports of injures but the crash blocked two of the three lanes in that area.

TRANSPORT TRAILER ROLLS OVER

(Batchawana, Ont.) People traveling on Hwy 17 in the Batchawana area can expect some traffic delays as crews attempt to upright an overturned trailer of a transport.

Sometime around 6:00 p.m. last night the driver was southbound on Hwy 17 near the Batchawana River. He advised police that he tried to avoid a moose and went off the roadway. The trailer on the transport rolled onto its side in the ditch but the tractor unit remained upright.

Salvage crews will be at the scene this morning attempting to upright the trailer and remove it from the ditch. Motorist traveling in the area can expect delays in traffic movement until the unit is out of the ditch.

CD PLAYER STOLEN

(Elliot Lake, Ont.) Police are currently investigating the theft of a CD player. Information received indicates that sometime between 12:00 p.m. June 12, 2007 and 5:00 p.m. June 12, 2007 unknown person(s) removed a Sony Explode CD player from a parked vehicle on Frame Crescent. No other items have been reported missing.
