SEVERAL BEAR SIGHTINGS REPORTED TO OPP

(Sault Ste. Marie, ON) – With several bear sightings reported to Sault Ste. Marie OPP both north and east of the City, OPP would like to remind residents not to approach the wild animals.

OPP suggest the following tips for avoiding contact with the bruins and what to do if contact is unavoidable. While a bear may seem docile, it could react badly if threatened or crowded.

*Make noise as you move through wooded areas. Singing, whistling or talking will alert bears to your presence, giving them a chance to avoid you.

*Stay calm. The bear is often just passing through. If it doesn’t find food it will keep moving. Your residence could be located near the bear’s natural habitat.

*If a bear is in a tree, leave it alone. Stay away from the area and remove any pets, especially dogs. The bear will come down after dark when it feels safe.

*Keep away from the bear, do not block its exit.

*Use care when storing and disposing of garbage.

If you have contact with a bear, contact the Sault Ste. Marie OPP at 1-888-310-1122. If the bear is threatening, persistent or aggressive, call 911.
