OPP have identified the victim of a fatal snowmobile accident last night om Lake Nipissing. 18-year old Brian Sloss of North Bay died in the accident, which occurred around 8:20 p.m. on Lake Nipissing close to the mouth of the Lavase River.

Twenty-three year old Michael Gibson, also of North Bay, is in serious condition at North Bay General Hospital. Police are continuing their investigation into the accident.

Batchewana First Nation, Ont. - Batchewana First Nation Police and the Sault Ste Marie OPP Crime Unit have made an arrest from an October 2004 robbery.

On October 17 2004 Sewell's Gas Bar on the Batchewana First Nation was robbed at gunpoint.

Stolen was a quantity of cash and cigarettes. Late on Tuesday January 4, an 18-year-old Sault Ste. Marie woman was arrested and appeared in bail court today. Renee Cyr, of the City of Sault Ste. Marie, faces charges of armed robbery, using a firearm in the commission of an offence and wearing a disguise in the commission of an offence.
The accused has been held in custody. Officers from both police services are continuing to investigate the robbery.

St. Charles, Ontario) – The bodies of a man and a woman have been recovered from the scene of a fire that destroyed a farmhouse early yesterday morning (Jan. 4, 2005) at 252 Casimir Road in St. Charles, Ontario.

The remains of the woman have been positively identified as that of Carmen Lapalme, 58. Investigators believe the deceased male is her husband Gerry, 61, however, positive identification has not been made at this time. An investigation by members of the Ontario Provincial Police North East Region and the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office is continuing.


(Highway 17, Thessalon Township) - Today at approximately 11 a.m., members of the East Algoma – Thessalon OPP stopped a U-Haul Motor Vehicle on Highway 17 east of Thessalon.

Investigation led to the discovery of illegal contraband being located in the rear of the U-Haul.

Approximately 6,000 cartons of cigarettes were discovered.
The cigarettes were being transported from Quebec to British Columbia.

The male (38) from Surrey, British Columbia has been turned over to the RCMP.


Elliot Lake, Ont.) - On January 2, 2005 the East Algoma OPP attended a residence in the Elliot Lake area regarding a possible assault. Investigation completed and a 78-year-old Elliot Lake man has been charged with the following in regards to an incident in his home;

- possession of a weapon for dangerous purposes
- assault with a weapon
- utter threat to cause death or bodily harm

The accused is scheduled to appear in court on February 1 2005.
The victim, a caregiver, sustained minor injuries during the altercation.



(Elliot Lake, Ont.) - Police are investigating a Break and Enter on Timmins Road in Elliot Lake. Sometime between January 2, 2005 and January 4, 2005 unknown person(s) entered an apartment and stole various items. Missing is a VCR, Walkman, video camera and cash. Anyone with any information regarding this Break and Enter is asked to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers.
