Two people are facing drug-related charges after a traffic stop last week in Batchewana First Nation.
On Oct. 10 at approximately 12:27 p.m., Batchewana First Nation Police observed a motor vehicle on Gran Street “driven by an individual known to be on conditions to remain outside” the community.
The vehicle was pulled over and two people were arrested.
Police say a search of the occupants and the vehicle uncovered $5,000 worth of street drugs: over 16 grams of suspected fentanyl, over 23 grams of suspected cocaine and approximately 2 grams of suspected methamphetamine.
The driver, 30-year-old Nelson Solomon of Garden River First Nation, is charged with:
- Operation while prohibited
- Driving while under suspension
- Possession of Schedule I substance for trafficking - Fentanyl
- Possession of Schedule I substance - Cocaine
- Possession of Schedule I substance - Methamphetamine
- Failure to comply with undertaking - three counts
- Fail to comply with probation order
The passenger, 44-year-old Monica Mantovan from Garden River First Nation, is charged with possession of Schedule I substance - cocaine.
The driver was remanded into custody and the accused was released. She is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on Nov. 18 in Sault Ste. Marie.
None of the allegations have been tested in court and both suspects are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
