(SAULT STE. MARIE, ON) – OPP have been kept busy investigating motor vehicle collisions over the past three days as a result of winter’s arrival.

There have been four collisions on Highway 17 north and three on Highway 17 East.

A single motor vehicle rollover yesterday morning resulted in a 72 year old male being transported to hospital by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries.

The male was driving westbound on Highway 17B, Garden River First Nation, when he lost control due to slush.

The vehicle rolled several times coming to rest in the northbound ditch.

Fortunately the man was wearing his seatbelt, which saved his life.

In an effort to remind local motorists about the rigors of winter driving, the Sault Ste. Marie OPP have compiled and forwarded the following safety tips. Taking the time to prepare your vehicle for the winter season might be the difference between a safe motoring experience and a precarious one.

- TAKE YOUR TIME, GIVE YOURSELF ADDITIONAL TIME TO REACH YOUR DESTINATION
- USE WINTER TIRES
- USE WINTER RATED FUEL
- HAVE YOUR VEHICLE SERVICED PRIOR TO THE ONSET OF WINTER. YOUR SERVICE POINTS SHOULD INCLUDE: RADIATOR FLUSH, OIL CHANGE, BATTERY TESTED, TIRES ROTATED AND BALANCED,
- CHECK TIRE PRESSURE TO ENSURE IT IS WITHIN APPROPRIATE LIMITS TO ENHANCE TIRE GRIP, CHECK ROUTINELY
- BEFORE YOU LEAVE, HAVE YOUR VEHICLE WARMED UP, WINDOWS CLEARED OF FROST, ICE AND SNOW FOR ENHANCED VISIBILITY
- FOR SHORT TRIPS, ALWAYS CARRY: ICE SCRAPER, SNOW BRUSH, WINTER RATED WINDSHIELD WASHER FLUID.
- FOR LONG TRIPS, ALWAYS CARRY: THE ABOVE + MAPS AND A FULLY CHARGED CELL PHONE.
- ALWAYS CARRY A WINTER TRAVEL KIT WHICH SHOULD BE IN YOUR TRUNK AND SHOULD CONTAIN: FIRST AID KIT, BLANKET, BOOTS, WARM CLOTHING, SHOVEL, WATER, CANDLES, FREEZE DRIED FOOD (-granola bars, dried fruit, etc)
- BEFORE ANY LONG TRIP, CHECK WITH WEATHER CHANNEL OR ENVIRONMENT CANADA OR TRANSPORT CANADA FOR UPDATED ROAD AND WEATHER WARNINGS.

MISCHIEF REPORTS

(MACDONALD TOWNSHIP, ON) – Sometime over the past 2 days person(s) unknown damaged a rear door to the Echo Bay Post Office by scratching an obscene drawing onto the door causing the paint on the door to be scraped off.

(HAVILLAND TOWNSHIP, ON) – Damage to a Bell telephone booth Highway 17 North near Havilland Bay was was reported to OPP yesterday.

The bracket for the telephone directory and seat inside the booth was ripped out and smashed.

FEMALE IN CUSTODY AFTER DOMESTIC DISTURBANCE

(FEWNWICK TOWNSHIP, ON) – OPP were called to a residence in Fenwick Township yesterday evening at approximately 7:25 p.m. regarding a domestic disturbance.

A 23 year old male was transported to hospital by ambulance with serious injuries to his arm area. He was later released.

A 28 year old female was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault and is being held in custody pending a bail hearing.
