OFFICER DRAGGED DOWN ROAD BY DRUNK ATV DRIVER

(Echo Bay, Ont.) An officer with the Sault Ste Marie OPP Detachment was dragged about fifty feet down the road after he tried to stop a drunk on an ATV.

On Friday 18 May 2007 at about midnight officers with the Sault Ste Marie OPP Detachment were conducting R.I.D.E. checks on Church Street in Echo Bay.

A man on a three wheeled ATV approached the spot check and refused several demands to stop. He drove the ATV onto the sidewalk in an attempt to get away from the officers. One officer grabbed the man by the shoulder and arm. The driver continued to accelerate the machine and dragged the officer about fifty feet down the sidewalk and roadway.

The machine with the officer and operator eventually rolled onto its side and stopped.

He has been charged with Driving While Over the Legal Limit of .08, Driving While Under Suspension, Failing to Stop For Police, Driving With No Helmet, Driving With No Licence Plate and No Insurance. IMPAIRED WITH A CHILD IN THE VEHICLE

(Laird Township, Ont.) An Echo Bay woman has been charged with drinking and driving over the weekend and a child was in the car with her.

On Sunday 19 May 2007 at about 10:00 p.m. the officer was patrolling Lakeview Road in Laird Township. The officer noticed a vehicle leaving a private drive in a manner that caught his attention. As the officer approached the vehicle he saw a small child about five years old in the vehicle.

The driver showed indicators that she had been drinking. A test at the scene revealed that the driver would be taken to the police station for further testing. A relative of the child attended the scene and took care of the five year old. Further testing at the station alleges that the driver was over the legal limit to be driving.

Forty one year old Denise COOPER of Bar River Road in Echo Bay has been charged with one count of Driving While Over the Legal Limit of .08. She will appear in court on June 18, 2007.

LOTS OF TICKETS FROM THE MEN AND WOMEN OF THE SAULT OPP

(Sault Ste Marie, Ont.) Between break and enters, impaired drivers and all the other occurrences this weekend, the men and women station at the Sault Ste Marie OPP detachment managed to write a few tickets this long weekend.
