SAULT STE. MARIE OPP CRACKDOWN ON DRIVING VIOLATIONS THIS VICTORIA DAY WEEKEND

(Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) Throughout this Victoria Day long weekend Sault Ste. Marie OPP laid thirteen charges under the Highway Traffic Act on Ontario, two charges under the Liquor License Act of Ontario and one impaired driving charge.

Six of these charges stemmed from traffic complaints called in by motorists on Highway 17 both East and West of Sault Ste. Marie.

Charges included seatbelt violations, suspended drivers, speeding, driving without a driver’s license, and not having a validated license plate.

Two drivers were charged under the Liquor License Act of Ontario for having open liquor readily available in a vehicle.

One male driver was stopped at a Ride Check where an odor of alcohol was detected. The male failed the roadside Alcotest and was brought back to the OPP detachment for Intoxylizer tests.

Charged with Operating a motor vehicle with over 80 mgs. of alcohol contrary to Section 253(b) of the Criminal Code of Canada is 46 year old Mark DESBIENS, of 280 Fifth Line West, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. DESBIENS was released on a Promise to appear for court at a later date.

ATV DRIVER RECEIVES MINOR INJURY IN ROLLOVER

(Tilley Twp., Ont.) On Friday, May 16th at approximately 6:30 p.m. a 20 year old man from Belleville Michigan received minor injuries when the 2001 green Polaris All Terrain Vehicle he was driving rolled over on the southbound shoulder of Mile 38 Road in Tilley Township.

The driver was southbound on his ATV when a rock hit his hand causing him to loose control of the ATV and roll into the ditch.

The ATV received moderate damage and could not be driven. No charges have been laid.

COUNTERFEIT $5.00 BILLS CIRCULATE IN ECHO BAY

(MacDonald Twp.) On Saturday the 17th May, 2008 at approximately 5:00 p.m. Sault Ste. Marie OPP detachment received a complaint of seven $5.00 bills from three different businesses in the Echo Bay area reported as counterfeit money.

Dinelle’s General Store, the LCBO (Liquor Control Board of Ontario), and the Country Market in Echo Bay all reported receiving counterfeit $5.00 bills within a one day period.

LOCAL MAN TRANSFERRED TO LONDON BURN UNIT AFTER FIRE MISHAP

(Davaieux Twp., Ont.) On Sunday, May 18th 2008 at approximately 01:00 a.m., Sault Ste. Marie OPP and Sault Ste. Marie Ambulance were called to attend at a camp near Spruce Lake Lodge, Mile 38 Road in Davaieux Township.

Investigation revealed that 21 year old Tristan ANDERSON of 92 Lakeshore Drive in Sault Ste. Marie was at a camp near Spruce Lake Lodge with five of his friends.

ANDERSON was starting fire to burn an old pool table outside. He went to put some gas on the fire when he slipped with the gas can in his hand. The gas can caught fire as he was walking away and it ignited his clothing.

He began rolling on the ground and one of his friends pulled his sweater off him. One of his friends then transported him by truck until the ambulance was met.

ANDERSON has received first and second degree burns to his face, neck and arms. He has been transferred to the London Burn Unit.

THEFT AT SUNSET SHORES RESORT

(Fisher Twp., Ont.) In the early morning hours of May 18th, 2008 3 cases of beer and a pink cooler were stolen from a camper at Sunset Shores Resort located on the Batchewana River and a craftsman tool chest with miscellaneous tools from a rented cabin beside the store.

FIRE DESTROYS CAMP

(Batchewana First Nation, Ont.) On Sunday, May 18th at approximately 11:50 a.m. Batchewana First Nation Police were called to investigate a building fire on Mission Road on the Batchewana First Nation.

A 16 x 16 wooden frame camp built two years ago had burned to the ground sometime within the last three days.

The area in which the camp is located is remote and isolated.
