Narrowly Misses Head-On Collision with OPP Cruiser

HAVILLAND Twp., ON -  On June 11, 2012 at approximately 7:00 pm OPP received a call from a motorist regarding a silver SUV travelling southbound on Highway 17 north near Chippewa River driving all over the roadway, crossing the center line and onto the shoulder of the highway.

An OPP cruiser travelling northbound in the area observed the vehicle travelling southbound.

The vehicle crossed the centre lane, forcing the OPP officer to move his fully marked cruiser to the northbound shoulder off the highway in order to avoid a head-on collision.

The officer activated all emergency lights and attempted to stop the SUV that was now travelling southbound in the northbound lane.

The vehicle came to a stop in the centre of the roadway.

As a result of further Police investigation, forty-eight year old Maureen Cassavia of 113 Dell Avenue, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario was arrested and charged with Impaired Driving and Operation of a motor vehicle with over 80 milligrams of alcohol contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.

The accused was released on a Promise to Appear for Provincial Court in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario on July 9, 2012.
