BOATING ACCIDENT CLAIMS ONE LIFE On Monday June 11, 2007 at approximately 8:22 pm, The Superior East Detachment (Wawa) of the Ontario Provincial Police were notified of a possible drowning on Hawk Lake just outside of Hawk Junction.

On Monday June 11, 2007 at approximately 8:22 pm, The Superior East Detachment (Wawa) of the Ontario Provincial Police were notified of a possible drowning on Hawk Lake just outside of Hawk Junction. Attending officers were able to immediately attend the scene by boat, recover the victim, and transport him to shore. The victim was transported to Lady Dunn Health Center by ambulance where he was later pronounced dead.

The victim has been identified as Theodore NIZNIK, age 61 of Hawk Junction. Members of the Superior East Detachment in Wawa are continuing their investigation.

The Ontario Provincial Police would like to remind boaters that a life jacket needs to be worn to be fully effective.

MAJOR INJURIES IN HIGHWAY CRASH

(Echo Bay, Ont.) A crash on Hwy 17 last night in Echo Bay sent both the driver and passenger to Sault Area Hospital by ambulance

Last night at about 9:00 p.m. the operator of a pick up truck was traveling on Hwy 17 at the intersection of Bar River Road. The driver attempted to make a u-turn and lost control of the truck. The truck went into the ditch and a passenger in the truck was ejected from the vehicle.

Both the driver and passenger were taken to Sault Area Hospital. The passenger has been admitted to Hospital with major but non-life threatening injuries. Initial observations at the scene indicate that the passenger may have suffered a significant back injury. The driver was treated and released from hospital.

As a result of this investigation both the driver and passenger have been charged. The driver, twenty eight (28) year old Laurie URAJNIK of Queen Street in Sault Ste Marie has been charge with Driving with a Blood Alcohol Level Over .08 and Criminal Negligence Causing Bodily Harm Contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada. The passenger, a seventeen (17) year old Sault Ste Marie girl has been charged with Fail to Properly Wear a Seat Belt contrary to the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario.

Ms. Urajnik will appear in court on July 30, 2007


CANOE STOLEN

(Elliot Lake, Ont.) The East Algoma OPP is currently investigating the theft of a canoe. Police learned that sometime between June 7th, 2007 at 10:00 p.m. and June 8th, 2007 at 7:00 a.m. a canoe was stolen from the back yard of a residence on Ottawa Avenue in Elliot Lake. The stolen canoe is a 14-foot Sportspal, cream in colour with a square stern and a SIN number is engraved on the side.
