FATAL MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION

(Little Current, On) – On Sunday July 25th at approximately 10:00 AM, the Manitoulin Island OPP Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police investigated a single motor vehicle collision on Hwy 540 at McLean’s Mountain Rd, Howland Township that took the life of the male driver.

As a result of the collision, Jerry POLORNIK, age 79, of Blenheim, Ontario was pronounced dead at the scene. A female passenger was transported to hospital with minor injuries. She was later released.

The deceased was traveling on Hwy 540 when the vehicle, for unknown reasons at this time, left the roadway striking the ditch. The road and weather conditions at the time of the incident are described as being dry and clear.

The collision is still under the investigation by the Manitoulin Island OPP Detachment and the North East Region Technical Traffic Collision Investigation Unit.


The Detachment Commander, Staff Sergeant Bruce McCullagh indicated that the preliminary results of a post mortem examination indicate a medical condition may have contributed to the collision.

LOCAL BUSINESS VICTIM OF BREAK ENTER AND THEFT

(Elliot Lake, Ontario) – The East Algoma OPP is continuing their investigation of a break and enter at a local business in Elliot Lake.

Between 5:00 p.m. on July 13, 2010 and 7:05 a.m. on July 14, 2010 unknown person(s) gain entry to Farquahr Trucking situated on Highway 108 in Elliot Lake. Once inside person(s) accessed a locked safe and removed money. Also taken was a cash box with a small amount of petty cash.

DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE

(Elliot Lake, Ontario) – July 25, 2010 at approximately 8:20 p.m. officers of the East Algoma OPP were conducting stationary traffic enforcement on Axmith Avenue. The officer conducted a traffic stop of a subject driving an all terrain motor vehicle. The subject was unable to surrender a driver’s licence, vehicle permit, or insurance liability card.

Charged with the following is Ronald Stephen HAWES (51) of Elliot Lake.

Exceed 80 Milligrams Blood Alcohol
Possession of Cannabis – under 1 gram

HAWES is scheduled to appear in Elliot Lake court on September 7, 2010.

HAWES was also charged under the H.T.A. with the following:

Fail to surrender permit for motor vehicle
Driver fail to surrender licence

The subject was also charged with Failing to Surrender Insurance card.
