Gee the Ice was Good Last Week !!!!

(Blind River, Ont.) Two Blind River men were lucky to escape with their lives at year’s end as their motorized snow vehicle went through the ice.

Two men had driven through the trails in Blind River and decided to cross the Blind River to arrive at a West St. address on the west end of the Blind River.
They neglected to take into consideration the fact that the weather had turned mild for a few days and that they were traveling across the river where the current and has carved the ice for hundreds of years.

A resident who lived nearby hear the machine attempting to cross the River and then heard the noise stop and the light disappear. He alerted police and Fire rescue personnel who were on scene quickly. As the rescue personnel were venturing onto the ice Police were advised that the two wet riders had walked to an address on West St.

The operator of the machine , 18-year-old Corey M PILON of 6 Pearson Ave. Blind River, was charged under the Motorized Snow Vehicle Act for having No Insurance.

Police are reminding any person using the ice surfaces for travel to be cautious and sure of the ice conditions. They are not as safe as one would think..

According to the Lifesaving Society the following conditions should be met:

- 4” or 10 cm for persons walking on ice
- 5” or 12 cm for one snow vehicle or ATV
- 8-12” or 20 to 30 cm for one small car or pickup
- 12- 15” or 30 to 38 cm for one medium size vehicle or pickup truck
