Sault Ste. Marie OPP would like to remind everyone of two common winter activities that are not allowed by law.

With the recent arrival of snow in this area, some people have taken to depositing snow back on the roadway when they are cleaning their driveways. This practice is prohibited under the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario.

Soon after the snow plow passes, many people are plowing and/or shoveling the snow back onto the roadway. This creates a danger to other motorists by having an unexpected obstruction on the otherwise cleared roadway. Officers have the option of charging people under the Highway Traffic Act for this activity.

The second practice is pulling children on sleighs, tobaggans, and tubes behind snow machines. The Motorized Snow Vehicle Act clearly indicates that anything being pulled behind a snow machine must be attached to the snow machine by means of a rigid bar.
