NOW THAT’S TOUGH MEAT!! Laird Twp., Ont. Last night a moose apparently walked away from a collision on Hwy 17 between itself and a car. Last night at about 7:00 p.m. a Chev Impala was being operated on Hwy 17 in Laird Twp.

Last night a moose apparently walked away from a collision on Hwy 17 between itself and a car.

Last night at about 7:00 p.m. a Chev Impala was being operated on Hwy 17 in Laird Twp. The car struck a moose on the roadway. Damage to the car has been listed as moderate but the driver of the car indicates that the moose walked away from the crash.
No one was injured in the crash and the car was driven away from the collision.

FIRST PART OF NEW YEAR PLAGUE OPP WITH NUMEROUS MOTOR VEHCILE COLLISIONS

Since the 08th of January the Manitoulin OPP Have responded to 15 motor vehicle collisions during this past week. These collisions are due to the extremely mild temperatures that we have been experiencing and frost build up on area roads. Constable Allan Boyd Community Services Officer for the Manitoulin OPP reports, “ Speed is still the constant factor in the cause of these collisions. Some people just don’t adjust their driving habits to weather conditions.” In this past week OPP officers have responded to the following collisions;

2. Monday 08 Jan 07 at 8:39 Am Hwy 540 Howland Twp Single vehicle rollover

3. Monday 08 Jan 07 at 8:43 am Hwy 540 Honroa Bay Single vehicle rollover

4. Monday 08 Jan 07 at 8:48 am Hwy 542 Carnarvon Twp Single vehicle rollover

5. Monday 08 Jan 07 at 9:03 am Wikwemikong Way Wikwemikong Single vehicle rollover.

6. Monday 08 Jan 07 at 10:46 am Young Street 5kms south of Mindemoya Single vehicle slid into ditch

7. Tuesday 09 Jan 07 at 5:23 pm Mississagi Light House Road Dawson Twp Single vehicle rollover.

8. Tuesday 09 Jan 07 at 8:26 pm Union Road & Indian Point Rd. Mills Twp Single vehicle slid into ditch

9. Wednesday 10 Jan 07 at 3:15 pm Hwy 6 & Townline Road in Howland Twp Two vehicle collision driver sent to hospital

10. Friday 12 Jan 07 at 3:53 am Cross Hill Road, M’Chigeeng First Nation Single vehicle driver injured alcohol a factor

15. Sunday 14 Jan 07 at 5:07 pm Ketchankooken Trail Carnarvon Twp Single vehicle left roadway and entered Lake Mindemoya driver was able to exit vehicle in water unharmed.

With winter upon us now the police warm motorists to take extra time and adjust their driving to the conditions.


MANITOWANING YOUTH CHARGED WITH SEVERAL COUNTS OF BREAK AND ENTER

On Wednesday 10 Jan 2007 at 4:55 pm Manitoulin OPP received a complaint of a residential break & enter in the village of Manitowaning. It was learned that this home was entered several times over the past few months. Sgt. Rick Rusticus investigated the incident and as a result of this investigation a 15-year-old Manitowaning male was arrested and charged with several charges of attempt break & enter to commit an indictable offense and break and enter. The young persons name cannot be released under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. He will be appearing in youth court in February.

ROUTINE TRAFFIC STOP LEADS TO ARREST AND CRIMINAL CHARGES

On Saturday 13 Jan 07 at 1:03 am Constable John Robertson had the oppurnity to stop a red pick up truck on Hwy 551 as the truck had a loud exhaust noise. Upon checking the driver an odor of alcohol was detected and a roadside screening test was administered when the driver registered a warning. As a result of further investigation and check the driver it was learned that the subject was on a recognizance with conditions not to consume alcohol and remain on a curfew not to be out after 11:00pm in the evening. The subject was arrested and held for bail. Charged with two counts of failing to comply with a Recognizance is John Michael Corbiere age 21 of M’Chigeeng, Ontario. He is to appear in Gore bay Bail court on Monday the 15th Jan at 1:00pm.

R.I.D.E. CHECKS ON MANITLOULIN RESULTS IN LIQUOR SEIZURE AND IMPAIRED DRIVER CHARGED

On Saturday 13 Jan 07 at 11:30 pm Manitoulin OPP officers were conducting R.I.D.E. checks on Highway 542 in Central Manitoulin Township when a 1999 Ford winstar van approached and sped away from the scene. Police followed the vehicle and stopped the vehicle about a 1 km away from where the RIDE check stop was. Upon checking the vehicle a quantity of alcohol was observed and all occupants were under the legal drinking age. As a result of an investigation a male was charged with having liquor under the legal age.

On Saturday 14 Jan 07 at 2:17 am while officers were conducting further RIDE checks on Hwy 542 in Mindemoya. A 1997 black Ford vehicle approached and upon seeing the ride check turned around and headed in the other direction. Officers observing the vehicle evade the check pursued the vehicle and stopped it near the post office in Mindemoya. Upon checking the driver an odor of alcohol was detected and as a result of this stop the driver was arrested and charged with Impaired Operation of a motor vehicle he was later released to appear in Gore bay proncial court.
