CLOSE CALL FOR CANOEISTS
(WAWA, ON.) – On August 20, 2010 Superior East OPP in Wawa received a report that three individuals in a canoe had become swamped on Lake Superior approximately 4 kilometres from Agawa Campground in Lake Superior Provincial Park. The Park is located on Highway 17, 85 kilometres south of Wawa. The three subjects were wearing their life preservers at the time. Fortunately once the canoe became swamped the subjects were able to lift one of the group back into the canoe and bail it out. As a result they were able to hang on to the vessel and paddled back to shore safe and sound prior to police arrival. The three males ranging in age from 12 to 18 years of AMARANTH TWP., Ontario received no injuries as a result of this incident. The OPP remind all boaters that wearing life preservers while on the water will help ensure that these types of incidents come to a positive conclusion for everyone involved. BREAK, ENTER AND THEFT AT HORNEPAYNE SCHOOL
(HORNEPAYNE, ON.) – On August 22, 2010 Superior East OPP in Hornepayne received a report that person(s) unknown had broken into the Holy Name of Jesus School on Neesomadina Avenue sometime between August 20 and 22, 2010. Entry was gained by prying open a window on the south side of the building. Once inside suspects removed various electronic items from the school including an Apple Laptop; one I-Pod; one JVC Digital Camcorder; one BOSE I-Pod docking station as well as various accessories valued at approximately $2500.00. Suspect(s) then left the school through the front entrance. No other damage was reported to the premises. The OPP is asking the public’s assistance in apprehending those responsible for this crime. STUNT DRIVER CHARGED DOING 143 KILOMETRES/HR
(WHITE RIVER, ON.) – On August 22, 2010 Superior East OPP in White River were conducting RADAR patrol on Highway 17 south at Vasiloff Township near the Depew River. A southbound 2000 Toyota Solara, black entered the RADAR at 143 kilometres in a posted 90 kilometre zone. The male driver, Kamil Michal STOJ, age 19 of WINDSOR, Ontario was stopped and subsequently charged with Drive Motor Vehicle while Performing a Stunt. Further investigation also indicated that Mr. STOJ was driving while his driver’s licence was suspended. He will appear in Wawa traffic court on October 21, 2010 to answer to the two Highway Traffic Act charges. His vehicle was seized and impounded for 7 days. His Ontario Driver’s Licence was seized and returned to Ministry of Transportation.

STUNT DRIVER CHARGED DOING 178 KILOMETRES/HR
(WHITE RIVER, ON.) - On August 23, 2010 at 4:48 pm Superior East OPP in White River were approximately 5 kilometres south of White River on Highway 17. A northbound 2000 Toyota Corolla, white was observed proceeding at a high rate of speed. The vehicle entered the RADAR beam at 178 kilometres in a posted 90 kilometre zone. The vehicle was stopped and the driver advised of the infraction. As a result the male driver Syed Omar GILANI, age 18 of LONDON, Ontario was issued a summons for Drive Motor Vehicle while Performing a Stunt contrary to the Ontario Highway Traffic Act. His Driver’s Licence and vehicle were impounded for 7 days. He will appear in Wawa Traffic Court November 19, 2010 to answer to the charge.

BREAK ENTER AND THEFT
(Elliot Lake, Ontario) – The East Algoma OPP is currently investigating the break, enter and theft at a local service provider. Between 12:00 p.m. on August 18, 2010 and 8:20 a.m. August 19th, 2010 unknown persons entered the office located on the third floor of the Elliot Lake Civic Centre on Highway 108 in Elliot Lake and removed cash. Nothing else was taken at the time of this report.

SEARCH WARRANT NETS CHARGES FOR LOCAL MALE
(Elliot Lake, Ontario) – On August 20, 2010 the Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau, the Drug Enforcement Unit of the O.P.P. and members of the East Algoma OPP conducted a search warrant at a residence on Ottawa Avenue in Elliot Lake. Police arrested and charged Leonard Robert ARNOTT (44) of Elliot Lake with Production of Cannabis Marihuana. ARNOTT is scheduled to appear in Elliot Lake court on November 2, 2010
